    Butternut Squash Tart

When it comes to Fall food, pumpkin and Squash are the two things that come to mind. When we also think of Tart it usually is the sweet kind. Take this savory Butternut Squash Tart made with smooth Butternut Squash, some spices for the heat and drizzled with melted butter I guarantee it will make a great addition to your dinner table or even your Week-end lunch.

Why we love this recipe for Butternut Squash Tart:

    Butternut Squash Tart

Savory tart is great addition to your table for Vegetarians. Makes an excellent main dish if you are entertaining. With ready puff pastry sheet, it is super easy to come together with just a few pantry it

    The ingredients you will need:

    Tart Prep Ingredients

Butternut Squash medium size. You will have some leftover
Puff Pastry Sheet – Use readymade and it works perfectly. You can also make your own if you are so inclined.
    Onion
    Paprika – for the heat
    Cumin Seeds
Spice mix – Clove, Cinnamon and Green cardamom
The fats - Oil 1 Tbsp., Pam Spray or 1 Tbsp. of Butter for the Tart Pan and 2 Tbsp. Butter melted separately
    Salt for seasoning

    Step by step instructions:

How to cut the Butternut Squash:

Cut the Butternut Squash in thin circles as per steps below.
Hold the Squash horizontal on a cutting board and cut both the ends so it can stand on its upright
    Cut the Squash in half
Using Vegetable Peeler, peel the skin off the Squash.
Remove the seeds from inside of the Squash
Carefully cut thin circular slices. You may also need a few half circles to arrange around the tart.

    The process:

Cut the Onion in thin long slices
Deseed Green cardamom. Using Mortar and Pestle or spice grinder, grind the spices.
On a stove top, heat oil over medium flame. Add Cumin Seeds and let them crackle.
Add the Onion and Sauté for 3 minutes while stirring occasional so it doesn’t burn.
Add the spices and sauté for another minute. Season with Salt.

    Tart Prep

Turn off the heat and let mixture cool down for 5 minutes.
In a large bowl, add all the Onion and Spice mixture and Paprika. Mix this mixture thoroughly with only half the Butternut Slices. This quantity may be enough. As you start placing the pieces on the Tart, if you need more you can rub the Spice Mixture to more slices.

    Make the crust:

In a Tart dish, Spray with Pam Spray. I use Pam Spray with Butter flavor. You could also use 1 Tbsp. of Butter and rub it all over the Tart pan.

Place the Puff Pastry sheet over the tart pan and gently push it in place with your fingers or a spoon.
Roll a rolling pin over the tart pan to cut the Pastry sheet so as there is nothing hanging over the tart pan.
If you are using a square sheet and there are spaces left on the Tart pan, use leftover pastry sheet and patch it up with wet fingers.
Using a fork, prick the Puff Pastry all over to prevent it from Puffing up.
Place the Squash slices in circular shape starting from the outer side. Add the Onion mixture in between slices where you can.

Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for about 30 to 35 minutes. The puff pastry that you see on the sides of the Tart pan should be crisp and brown.

    Recipe Variations:

The Tart can be made with or without spices.
You could use only Onion, Garlic, Salt and Pepper.
Skip the Onion and Spices and season with Fried Sage and Thyme and season with Salt Pepper.
Garnish with your favorite Cheese. Parmesan goes very well.
